Ghana’s efforts at creating a cashless society has received a major boost from mobile telephony operator,
MTN, who at the weekend outdoored its newest service, MTN MobileMoney.
Ahead of official launching ceremonies Wednesday, MTN told a social gathering of company staff and their families as well as friends that the new service “will be the fastest and most secure way to send or receive money”.
MTN’s CEO, Brett Goschen told Myjoyonline the product is coming on stream immediately after launching on Wednesday, and will greatly facilitate payments across the country, not only to MTN customers.
Already nine banks and several business outlets have signed up as merchants of the service while several others are on the verge of closing discussions to sign onto the platform.
“You can load your wallet with it, transfer money to a MobileMoney wallet, transfer money to a non mobile service, buy MTN airtime, withdraw money, transfer money from a merchant to a MobileMoney wallet or a non mobile user and a host of services. Charges on the service, he assured, are very affordable and “some transactions are free of charge.”
Social mix
The annual social gathering event, dubbed MTN family Day Out, featured a cooking competition, football games and other sporting activities, while children and toddlers had plenty of fun playing a variety of kids’ games. There was also plenty to eat and drink.
Brett Goschen explained that members of staff of the company daily have to report early to work and usually may be required to stay late into the night. In the process they miss out on opportunities to fraternize with family and friends, a process he said is very key to social cohesion and so the fiesta is one of many ways to acknowledge their sacrifices and to say ‘thank you’, while bringing the big family together.
MTN also rewarded hard working staff deserving recognition.
