Environment Minister Sherry Ayitey has kicked against proposals that government should share cash from sale of Ghana’s oil among citizens.

The suggestion was made by U.S development expert Dr Todd Moss at an event organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs.

He argues handing cash directly to everyone annually is the best way to share oil revenue. Dr. Moss cited the state of Alaska and Libya as examples.

But Ms. Ayitey disagrees, saying Dr Moss’ comparison of Ghana and Alaska is untenable.

Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei-Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, will not take a position but wants Ghanaians to be given the chance to debate the proposal.

“I think we really need to be open-eyed; it provides us the option, as a country, let’s listen, be clear-eyed…and then make a wise decision.

There have been several theories and models that have sought to describe how the country can equitably distribute its oil wealth.

Meanwhile other experts believe direct cash handouts to the population will have little impact on their livelihoods.

A British oil expert has said in the event that the country decides to share its oil wealth among the citizenry, every individual would be entitled to only a dollar per week or $50 per year.
