Maulvi Wahab Adam, Ameer in charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Ghana, has appealed to politicians to accept the outcome of the December presidential and parliamentary elections to prevent any post-election conflict in the country.
He has therefore called on the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to join hands with religious bodies to collectively persuade the flag-bearers of all the contesting political parties to make a firm pledge to Ghanaians that they would accept the outcome of the elections in good faith.
Maulvi Adam made the appeal when he addressed the 42nd annual delegates’ congress of the students’ body at the Nyankpala campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS), on Friday.
The five-day congress was organised on the theme: “Ensuring a peaceful, free and fair election 2008; the role of the student,” and would among other things, elect new national executives for the next academic year.
Maulvi Adam who is also a member of the National Peace Council, said: “Our voice will be strengthened when we work together to ensure the success of the elections and a peaceful and prosperous Ghana”.
The Ameer advised NUGS to impress upon their members to desist from any act of violence that could lead to a wanton destruction of property and mayhem.
He advised the executive not to align itself with any political party but to strive to maintain its standards to achieve targets.
Mr. Issah Nasigre, Northern Regional Director of the National Commission on Civic Education said experience had shown that District Chief Executives, Members of Parliament and party and government factionaries would not be able to explain the manifestos of their various parties off-hand.
Mr. Kweku Tuoho Bombason, NUGS President, said the Union would ensure that this year’s election is peaceful, free and fair and urged the students not to do anything that would jeopardize the success of the polls.
