The Ghana Trade Union Congress (TUC) is asking its affiliated unions to merge in order to have a stronger front.

The union says it will constitute a committee of union veterans to advice the organization on how to convince its member unions, whose activities are similar, to merge.

The unions being considered for a merger are the General Agriculture Workers Union and the Timber Workers Union.

The Ghana Railway Workers' Union will be expected to merger with the Enginemen's Workers Union.

The TUC will also wish that the General Transport Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union, the Maritime and Dockworkers Union and the National Union of Seamen, come together as one entity.

Breakaway group, the Union of Industry Commerce and Financial Services, UNICOF, and the Industrial and Commercial workers Union ICU will also be expected to reunite.

Speaking to Joy Business the Secretary General of the TUC Kofi Asamoah says the unions will be better able to deal with their challenges if they come together.

“The cardinal principle in unionism is numbers; if you fragment yourself, you are not strong,” he told Joy Business’ Israel Layer.

“You may not be able to have the resources, both financial and human, to be able to grapple with your own challenges. So even if the law seeks to fragment us, we on our own, will need to think in line with the principles that underscore trade unionism,” he said.
