The Ghana Education Service (GES) has served notice it would blacklist the Great Lamptey Mills School if its proprietor is found culpable of illicit affairs with students.

Enoch Nii Lamptey Mills walked free after the father of a victim secured an out-of-court settlement in a case in which he was charged with compulsory marriage of one of his students after impregnating her.

Even though the proprietor may be enjoying a reprieve from the law courts, the GES - the body that oversees the conduct of all primary and secondary educational institutions in the country - says the matter is far from settled.

Public Relations Officer of GES Charles Parker Allotey told Joy News the GES has begun investigations into the matter and would soon make public its findings.

“Being in charge of private schools, it is our responsibility to check the conduct even of those people who manage the schools,” he said.

He said his outfit is tight-lipped on the state of the investigation, fearing it could prejudice the outcome, but explained “We have not ignored this issue, the GES is interested in the case. We are investigating it.”

He said the gravity of the outcome of investigation might inform the GES on what line of action to take.

“If we investigate it and see [that] it is a rampant thing that occurs in the school, we may be forced to withdraw our recognition,” he said.

However, human rights advocate Nana Oye Lithur appears uninterested in the outcome of the GES investigation.

She said the proprietor of the school is unfit to head any institution in the country, adding the out-of-court settlement sets a bad precedence for a country which is ‘pregnant’ with illicit affairs between teachers and students.
