Despite peace efforts ahead of the December polls, a chieftaincy crisis with political undertones is looming in Tolon in the Northern Region, the Coalition of Election Observers,(Codeo), has observed.

According to Codeo which is an arm of the Centre for Democratic Development(CDD), a regent in Nyankpala believed to be sympathiser of the opposition NDC is threatening to install two chiefs in villages perceived to be strong holds of the ruling NPP.

Inhabitants of the villages have vowed to resist any such instalment, fearing the area might fall to the NDC.

Mr. Abrampah Mensah, programmes officer of the CDD told Joy news the Northern Regional Security Task force as well as the Northern Regional House of Chiefs have been alerted to avert possible clashes that might erupt.

He said the regent has been prevailed upon to suspend any such instalment until the end of the election.

Codeo’s second report of election related violence prior to the December polls, reveals a remarkable reduction in violence between October and November.

The reduction notwithstanding, Mr. Mensah cautioned the security personnel to increase surveillance in the Tamale Metropolis, where there is still evidence of stock piling of arms.

He cited an area called Kalariga which he says has an historical record of political violence as one of the places where stock piling of arms still goes on unabated.

He cautioned, failure to impound those arms could lead to an outbreak of violence in the December polls.
