The Ghanaian Observer yesterday carried a disturbing story about the secret training of guerilla fighters at Bawku.

The paper accompanied the story with a picture of some youth seen holding sophisticated guns during one of their training sessions.

The Chronicle is appealing to the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the report carried by the paper to ascertain whether the story is true.

The civil war that has affected countries such as Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) all started in a similar way, which quickly spread to other parts of the country.

Under our laws, it is only the military, police and other security agencies that are permitted to handle such sophisticated weapons.

Since these weapons have found their way into civilian hands, it should be a source of worry for every peace-loving Ghanaian.

The government and people of Ghana can bear witness to the brutalities that occurred in the aforementioned countries in the name of civil and tribal wars, and as such we should never allow such calamities to happen in this country, which is now regarded as one of the peaceful countries on this earth.

The military must quickly clamp down on those conducting and financing this training, and if found out, deal with them according to the laws of this land.

What happened recently at Agbogloshie, a suburb of Accra, where human beings were slaughtered on our streets in broad daylight, should be enough warning to the National Security to take this newspaper publication serious.

We are also urging the security agencies, especially the military, to increase the number of their men on the grounds at Bawku and to crush any such guerilla training exercises.

Conscious efforts must also be made to tighten security at our borders, to prevent the escape of these trainees and their trainers, if the story turns out to be true, to prevent any situation where they will train outside the country before entering to cause havoc.

The international reputation that Ghana has attained should be jealously guarded by every Ghanaian, instead of allowing few blood-seeking people to destroy the country.
