The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) has warned the public of the presence and sale of fake Coartem tablets in Kumasi.
In a statement issued in Accra on Wednesday, following a press conference on July 6 and confirmatory that show the tablets to be benign, the FDB reiterated its call on pharmacies, licensed chemical stores and healthcare facilities to pull the relevant Coartem tablets from their shelves and dispensaries.
The Board's Quality Control Laboratory has shown that the fake Coartem tablets do hot contain Artemether and Lumefantrine, the main active ingredients of the original and genuine Coartem.
"This means that the fake products are mere dummy tablets with no anti-malaria activity and hence of no benefit to patients".
The statement further asked healthcare professionals to assist patients and consumers to distinguish the fake tablets from the real ones.
It encouraged the general public to visit the FDB website (
www.fdbghana.gov.gh) for pictorial presentations of the tablets. The statement urged those concerned to call 0244 337239 or 0244 337252 for further assistance on the matter.
