Former Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives Aminu Bello Masari has faulted the electoral system and political development in the country saying much needs to be borrowed by the country from its neigbouring Ghana adding that the two countries could not be compared on that basis.
Masari who hailed the Ghanaian political system was speaking while feeding questions from newsmen after attending the 42nd anniversary of the Bayero University Student Union Government (SUG).
He said, "What is happening in Ghana is a pride not only to Ghanaians but to the black man, that there is a country which is prepared to do it right and they started getting it right. I think you have seen the first day election, the run off to the election."
The former Speaker who was recently named as a co-chair of a delegation of the Carter Centre, a foundation for democratic sustenance founded by former US president Jimmy Carter, explained that such politically innate and conscious society is something that Nigeria should marvel at.
According to him, "A situation where the leading candidate had only 49.7 per cent of the votes, I believe in Nigeria they will say 'just push him', but there they say no. because of that less than one per cent there is going to be run off. There every vote count, that's what democracy is all about."
Asked whether he can rate Nigeria in relation to what is tenable in Ghana, Masari replied that, 'There is no basis for comparison."
