A 31-year-old auto-mechanic in Accra has appeared before the Asamankese Circuit Court charged with stealing a Mercedes Benz “207” bus valued at GH¢8,000.

Laminu Bawa pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of GH¢5,000 with two sureties, one of which would be certified by the police to re-appear on November 24, 2008.

Prosecuting, Police Detective Chief Inspector Robert Bediako said on October 23, the complainant, Stephen Kofi Abu, parked his Mercedes Benz “207” bus opposite a bank at Asamankese where he usually parked it.

He said, however, when Abu went for the bus at about 0430hours the next day, the bus had vanished.

Chief Inspector Bediako said Abu quickly informed the police, who relayed messages to police stations around the country and on the following day, the Mamprobi police located the missing vehicle at a fitting shop and arrested Bawa.

Bawa was then transferred to the Asamankese police to assist them in their investigations.

In a cautioned statement, Bawa admitted having the vehicle at his workshop but said it was sent there by one Babylon but the prosecutor said up to the time Bawa appeared in court, he had not been able to help the police to locate the said Babylon.
