Fishermen are advising the Agric Ministry to embark on an educational campaign to raise awareness about plans to emboss canoes with registration numbers.

The fishermen say this is needed to ensure that their colleagues comply with the exercise.

Registration of Canoes started nearly two years ago, but most fishermen refused to comply for fear that they would be taxed if they did.

Yesterday, Agric Minister Kwesi Ahwoi made it clear that his outfit together with the Food and Agriculture Organisation will freely emboss 1,000 canoes as a pilot, while the rest would be done in the course of the year.

But President of the Cape Coast Fishermen’s Association, Nana Kobina Akyen, said although the registration has proven useful, the Agric Ministry will have to get its act right.

Nana Akyen decried what he said has been trick of fishermen in the area to use chemicals for fishing.

He said some of the fishermen engaged in various practices that would not augur well for marine life.

The chief fisherman urged government to take steps to control the situation as it is getting out of hand.
