The Kusasi youth, one of the ethnic groups in the Bawku Municipality have kicked against the imposition of a state of emergency by the government.

Spokesperson of the group, Majid Alhassan Abawa, said the situation in the area does not warrant such a decision.

He was speaking to Joy News Correspondent Joseph Osei on Tuesday, following days of gunshots culminating in the death of three people.

The Regional Security Council chaired by the Regional Minister, Mark Wayongo, proposed a state of emergency after what he described as “a lot of impunity going on with people carry guns and shooting indiscriminately.”

Wayongo was personally under fire on Monday after he attempted to broker peace between the feuding factions.

Even though the president is yet to take such a decision, Majid Alhassan believes it will not be necessary and will be an overreaction to the crisis.

He said such a decision will not solve the crisis and rather advocated for the deepening of peace talks currently ongoing in the inter-ethnic peace committee.

Bawku has been in the news for all the wrong reasons with a protracted ethnic violence between the Kusasis and the Mamprusis.

Dozens of people have needlessly lost their lives and properties have been lost over such a long period permeating governments.
