Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, E.T. Mensah, says it is not incumbent on government to relocate squatters and traders who have been evicted from various settings in Accra.
Mr Mensah, who is a former mayor of Accra, said this in reaction to concerns raised by the minority in parliament that such evictions may compound the hardship evictees are likely to face.
But speaking to Joy News, the MP emphasized that the current Accra Mayor, Alfred Vanderpuije, is following due process in decongesting of the city.
He further explained that though such actions seem harsh, people will turn to appreciate it in the long run, noting, “Laws are meant to be enforced, just enforce the laws and people will follow.”
According to him, traders at the Makola market opposed decisions to decongest the area but they later agreed when the laws were enforced.
“When we were enforcing the law on the (Makola) pavements, the market women were very happy but a few of the hawkers were still hawking in the market. When they were moved out they started serving notices that if we don’t do anything about those who are outside they will also come out,” he noted, but when the laws were enforced people stopped hawking along the pavements.
