The police in Bawku are expected to release on bail the ten remaining suspects being held in connection with the recent violent clashes.

Earlier in the week 17 suspects, who were arrested after the violence, which left about three people dead, several others injured and properties destroyed, were released by the police after screening.

Upper East Regional Police Commander ACP Bright Oduro told Joy News that the police are now compelled to release the remaining ten suspects because they lack evidence to prosecute them, but assured that investigations would continue.

“We have released 17 as at Wednesday. Ten minors and seven elderly persons were released, but as I speak to you they [the ten] may also be granted bail very soon.

“As at now we have not been able to gather enough evidence against them; whether they were involved in the shootings or they have committed the atrocities, or whether they are involved in some acts of violence that might have taken place in the past.

“We may bail them very soon whilst we continue investigations into their roots.”

Aside the civilian casualties, some police officers detailed to maintain peace and order in the area are currently receiving treatment after they sustained various wounds during the clashes.

ACP Oduro described the attacked on them as unfortunate and worrying.

“We are worried because we are there to play a neutral role; we are there to ensure that there is law and order. We should not be part of the problem, we are part of the solution.

“So if we are being targeted then that is indeed unfortunate. But whether straight or direct attack, I don’t believe [it] matters, what matters is that we have also been injured and therefore very worrying.”

The government has put in place a number of measures to restore peace in the area. Already, four light armoured cars and 200 bullet-proof vests have been sent to Bawku following a distress call the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) sent to Accra on Monday.

The Bawku township has been put under curfew from 6pm to 6am.
