Hon. John Mahama, Member of Parliament for Bole Bamboi and National Democratic Congress presidential running mate, has said President J.A. Kufuor must make a personal commitment to bequeath a peaceful nation to whoever succeeds him.

A peaceful and united nation, according to John Mahama, should be President Kufuor’s legacy just as he was entrusted with.

John Mahama told Joy News that the President’s personal intervention is key in ensuring law and order ahead of the December Polls.

He said the recent clash in Tamale and elsewhere in the country are clear indications that the nation may not have a peaceful election in December and a smooth transition of government.

John Mahama also wants President Kufuor to ensure that weapons are retrieved from all conflict areas in the country.

“The legacy that President Kufuor can leave for Ghana is to put his foot down and make sure that we have peaceful elections. He inherited a peaceful nation and the handing over was smooth. The onus is on him to do same to whoever his successor is.”

According to John Mahama, the President is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and all the security services and his directives on how they conduct their profession will be key to national security and peace.

“There is a certain culture of impunity that has developed in Tamale where it is known that some civilians have arms and yet anytime there is a shooting incident in Tamale you find that nobody is arrested, nobody is prosecuted.

“President Kufuor should call his security chiefs and tell them that no matter your political affiliation, if you breach the law, in any part of the country by possessing arms illegally, and firing those arms in public places, you must be arrested and prosecuted”.
