The flag-bearer of the Convention People’s Party has blamed the recent clashes in Gushiegu and Tamale on inadequate security in the area.

Dr Nduom said the violence which led to death of at least three persons with several houses destroyed could have been prevented if security forces in the region were provided with adequate logistics.

The CPP presidential candidate who is rounding off his tour of the area said his investigations had revealed that security officials in the region could not contain the situation because they feared for their lives.

“The police I am told in some cases even run away, and I don’t blame them because they were over-crowded,” he stated.

He said there had been reports of instances where police officials dispatched to forestall peace held sticks and “old-fashioned rifles” whiles the warring factions wield heavy weapons – shot guns, and high powered rifles.

Dr Nduom said the situation presents a great deal of difficulty for the police.

The violence in Gushiegu and Tamale, the latest in conflicts that have rocked the Northern Region was reportedly triggered by minor misunderstandings between members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

While calling for a revamp of the arms magazine of the northern security, Dr Nduom related that the situation is not limited to northern Ghana alone.

He said the minor skirmishes across the country were a stunning pointer of how porous the country’s security has been.

The CPP flag-bearer called for cool heads in the run-up to the December polls.

Meanwhile the CPP Dr. Nduom has called on both the NDC and the NPP to halt all party political campaigns in Gushiegu and Tamale.

He said the two parties must rather work towards finding lasting peace in the area.
