Lawyers for Bawku Central Member of Parliament, Adamu Dramani, say their client would not speak to the police because his statement could be used against him in court.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has been investigating Mr Dramani over allegations that he holds dual citizenship.

An Accra Fast Track High Court ruled last week – after he failed to put in his defence – that Mr Dramani could no longer hold himself as an MP for the constituency.

Mr Dramani subsequently filed a stay of execution of the High Court’s decision while he awaits the outcome of an appeal.

But speaking to Joy News on Monday, Mr Egbert Faibile, lawyer for the disqualified MP said his client would hold back his statement for now until the appeal filed at the Appeals Court is cleared.

“It will be suicidal and for that matter improper, to give the police any statement as we have the apprehension that any statement that we give may end up in the hands of our opponents to be used against us,” Mr Faibile said.

“We prefer to remain silent once it is an option under our criminal jurisprudence.”

Mr Dramani’s alleged dual citizenship status is said to have come up during last year’s primaries but generated headlines when a herdsman in the constituency dragged the MP to court to challenge his true allegiance to the country.
