Ghanaian Para-cyclist to participate in UCI World Championship

Ghanaian para-cyclist, Alem Bawa Mumuni has qualified to participate in the Union Cycliste International (UCI) Para–Cycling World Championship slated for Italy in September.

Mumuni, who turns 26 on December 31 made certain of his ticket to the global championship by emerging the overall best cyclist at the just ended JAPHAF (Games of the Future for the Disabled People of French-speaking Africa) in Niamey, Niger.

The Ghanaian para-cyclist won two medals, Gold and Silver during the May 25 to 30 championship, that drew participation from 11 Francophone countries across the continent.

Mumuni, the sole participant from the Anglophone Region was the winner in the Road race, finishing the 22km race in 49 minutes 20 seconds.

He was presented with a UCI T-shirt and a basketball donated by JAPHAF of the championship attended by some high profile sporting dignitaries including the Nigerien First Lady, Hadjia Laraba Tandja.

Mumuni told GNA Sports he is proud of his achievement even amidst difficulties in raising funds for the event.

“I am proud to have represented the whole Anglophone countries and more particularly Ghana where I raised high the country’s flag.

“In a nutshell, I’m proud to have emerged as the winner having passed through the numerous challenges before being able to participate in the event.”

The World championship has been fixed for September 8 to 13 in Bogogno, Italy.
