The Ghana Seniors Baseball League came to a grand ending last Saturday at the Tema Community Seven Baseball Field. The competition, with major sponsorship from Krypton Ghana Limited, a Sports Marketing and Management firm, had five teams participating. At the end of the six-week long Baseball fiesta, Anosby Heroes lifted the magnificent trophy donated by Krypton Ghana Limited. Brotherhood came second in the competition, with St. Nickles, Patriots and Legon Angels following in that order.
This year’s Seniors Baseball League was unique in the sense that it was the first time, in nine years, that the competition was being held. Due to lack of funding, the competition had gone on a forced holiday, but due to the determination of the Executive of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Association, coupled with the assistance received from Krypton Ghana Limited, Ohayo Ghana Foundation, Royal Dalex, Voltic Ghana Limited, Hords Company Limited, Right To Play, Franeva Pharmacy, Nestle Ghana Limited and MTN, the 2009 version was very successful.
In his Closing address, the Chairman of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Association [GHABSA], Rev. Albert Ocran, praised the efforts of the various corporate bodies that had come to the aid of the Association in its time of need. He reiterated the need for companies to come to the aid of Ghana Baseball and Softball since there were a lot of talents being unearthed by various outreach programs who needed that vital push to succeed.
The Closing Ceremony of the tournament was attended by Dr. Cubagee, 1st Vice-President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, Chief Executive Officer of Krypton Ghana Limited [Major Sponsors of the 2009 Ghana Seniors Baseball League], and representatives of Nestle Ghana Limited, Hords Company Limited and Voltic Ghana Limited.
In his short speech, Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, CEO of Krypton Ghana Limited, said that his company was inspired to sponsor the 2009 Ghana Seniors Baseball League because of the needs that Krypton Ghana Limited had identified in Ghana sports. He said that although Krypton usually sourced sponsorship for Sports organizations, the company had taken the decision to sponsor Ghana Baseball so as to attract Corporate Ghana to also get involved with the game. He indicated Krypton Ghana’s desire to see Ghana Baseball rise to the top of the African rankings in Baseball. His speech drew a rousing response from the representatives of the participating teams that had gathered.
The highlight of the Closing Ceremony was the presentation of prizes to deserving participants. The Most Valuable Player Award went to Bilal Nyanyo of Brotherhood, who took home a magnificent trophy; the Most Promising Player Award went to Philip Otchere, with the Most Disciplined Player Award going to Mohammed Ibrahim (BABA), each of whom received a gold and silver medal respectively. Prizes were presented by Dr. Cubagee, Mr. Kweku Abedu Wilson [Secretary-General of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Association] Mr. Samuel Sackey [Executive Member of the GHABSA] and Mr. Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe. Dr. Cubagee, supported by Mr. Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe and Rev. Albert Ocran, presented the Championship Trophy to Anosby Heroes, winners of the 2009 Ghana Seniors Baseball League.
Mr. Hugo Barzini, an Executive Member of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Association, gave the assembled crowd some keen insights into the game of Baseball by running superb commentary. The La Branch of the Nationwide Supporters Group of Ghana (NSU) was also in attendance to give some local music flavor to the occasion.
The next edition of the Ghana Seniors Baseball League is set to commence in the third quarter of next year.
