Nana Kofi Ansah II, Chief of Mpakadan in the Akwamu Traditional Area in the Eastern Region, has appealed to the Ministry of Tourism, to exploit the immense tourism potential in the area.

He said the development of tourism, would go a long way to create job opportunities to the unemployment youth in the Asuogyaman District.

Nana Ansah made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, during the 5th celebration of his ascendance to the throne.

He said the Mpakadan town, which is close to the Volta River Basin and surrounded by mountainous and serene plain could be developed into a tourist attraction, which would fetch the country foreign exchange.

Nana Ansah said the area also abound in historical artefacts, notably the original keys of the Osu Castle, which was seized by the late Asomani, a warrior from Akwamu, the gold plated walking stick of the then Governor of the Gold Coast and other important traditional paraphernalia.

“The hospitability and the accommodating nature of the people are catalyst to open up and tap the tourism benefits that abound in the area,” he said.

He appealed to the District Assembly and the Eastern Regional Highway Authority, to rehabilitate the road leading to the town.

Mr Hottman Kwadwo Cudjoe, Youth Leader of the town, said plans were far advanced for the take off of a health post and a community centre and urged citizens from the town, who reside in Accra and abroad to support the development initiative.
